Hello TSA Members and welcome to our first newsletter of the 2018 -2019 season. My name is Claude Moore and I am your president for this season. You may ask, what can go on in a curling club during the summer? The answer is... a lot! As host to the Canada 55+ Games August 20 - 24, the curling club has been extremely busy.
55+ Games
TSA is hosting August 20 - 24. See the teams and schedule on the official website at http://canada55plussj.ca/ice-curling. We hope to see you throughout the various matches. But wait, not all the action is on the ice!
TSA will be offering a 1&1/2 hour Trolley tour of historic Saint John to the 55+ Games Athletes & Guests. Space is limited so if you would like to be added to the waiting list, stop by TSA or call 634-7656. The tour is available 10, noon or 2pm on August 22 and 23. Tickets are only $20.
The Ice
The Ice is In
We started making ice in July. Thanks to the hard work of Bob, Mike and many TSA volunteers things are really looking good. Special thanks to Stan Curran, Dale Price and Merrill Loughery of Carleton Curling Club who were very generous with their time, supplies, advice and support.
We would like to welcome our 2 newest ring sponsors. Along with WFG and Sure Flow Plumbing & Heating, we now have sponsorship across sheets 4 through 8!
Wendy's
We welcome Wendy's as a ring sponsor this year. Ron Jones has been a long time supporter and curler. Drop by one of his three locations for chili & a frosty!
Loch Lomond Veterinary Hospital
Thank you to Dr. Mitchell Downey for your support. Mitch's clinic is at 1964 Loch Lomond Rd.and provides companion animal and equine services.
Hiccups Along the Way
On August 16th we held a Special General Meeting to ask for the support of the Members to spend in excess of $10,000 to fix the compressor. Two pistons broke in the big compressor and the little compressor was put to work.
If you attended the meeting, you know all the details. But to sum it up, essentially all of the hard work from July melted. In order to meet our commitments to the 55+ Games we had to fix the compressor, have our contractors work over time, and pay our own staff to re-do the ice. You may also notice between sheets 3 and 4, a new industrial dehumidifier donated by Peter Meyers that keeps humidity down and freezes the ice more quickly. Thank you to everyone who attended. The resolution proposed at the meeting was passed unanimously and, as you can see, the ice looks great. We can proudly host the curlers from across Canada during the Games.
To help cover this cost and better prepare us for future, unexpected incidents, we are initiating an Ads and Sponsorship committee. There will be more on this from Charlene Copeland in a day or two. Please help if you can.
Rock On!
We are keeping the ice in for September and October. This opens up all sorts of opportunities for players to get into shape before the season begins. We have put together a variety of events. Check the calendar and the descriptions for more details.
We Love New Curlers
TSA will be hosting a Curling 101 session at 6:00 pm on September 27. Curling 101 is a 1 hour program created by Curling Canada, aimed at new curlers of all ages, including families, and is intended to show participants how much fun curling can be.
Prior to the in-house event, in a partnership with Rock Solid Productions/Curling Canada, we will be holding Rocks and Rings sessions at various local elementary schools to drive attendance. We will be looking for enthusiastic volunteers on the 27th to assist with this initiative. Stay tuned for more information.
The Club
We were very lucky to have had Jacob, a summer student, working with Bob and Mike this past summer. He has spruced up the parking lot, painted the inside, shampooed the carpets and helped with the ice. He's been hard working and diligent as we get ready for the curling season. Thank you Jacob!
Dufferin Hall
Dufferin Hall has been the scene of many weddings and parties this past summer. There are a few dates available. Call Mike at 634-7656 for details.
TSA Open House will be:
Saturday Oct. 13 (students and adults) 1 - 3pm
Sunday Oct. 14 (Little Rocks and Juniors) 1 - 3pm
Plan to attend and bring your friends! There will be fun & prizes!
Details will be posted on the website: http://www.tsacurlingclub.com/
